Indulge me, for a moment, while I share my thoughts on an online transcriptionist / captioner company called Rev. Rev.com is definitely a legitimate company, and one in which you can earn some money. I would like to offer my absolute honest opinion about my experience with Rev and what my chosen alternative has become.

Options For The Freelancer

Since you found yourself on this page, you’re likely looking for online work and to be paid for doing it. Let me show you what Rev has placed on its website for freelancers like you and me.

My Experience

A couple of months ago, I found this website and it sounded promising. I had seen a review of it and then I did some more searching to read more reviews. Since this was near the beginning of my journey to find ways to make money online, I was looking for reviews to come right out and tell me that this was a legit company. I couldn’t find any reasons not to give it a try. I signed up quickly for a freelance account. I had no idea what it meant to transcribe something, but I was willing to give it an honest effort.

The Process

What was first brought to my attention was that Rev, like many others, has its own style guide. This can be confusing if you’re used to transcribing for another company. Style guides are important as they teach you the way the company wants things typed. There are rules for punctuation, numbers, what to do if you can’t understand something, etc. I found that each company like this has its own book of rules, if you will, so you can imagine there is a little of a learning curve.

I was asked to read through and study the style guide. I find these things interesting, as I have an interest in grammar and the English language. I’m a bit of a grammar nerd, so I read through all the tips and tricks listed in the guide. I wanted to be successful in transcribing, and since this was my first shot at it, I wanted to do it right. There was a quiz or two and some typing tests to take before I was allowed to begin transcribing for the company.

Transcribing

In case you’ve never even heard of transcribing before, it’s a fancy word for listening to audio and typing what you hear. In fact, it goes a little deeper than that. You’re given pieces of audio that you have to decipher and type exactly what you hear. Up front, it all sounds promising. You can preview the job prior to claiming it, but also, you are able to unclaim it soon after, if it appears too difficult.

What It’s Really Like

It’s true. This is a legitimate way to earn some cash while lounging in your pajamas from the comfort of your couch. However, I very quickly learned a few things. First and foremost, you want to be sure and understand the style guide. If you don’t, you will make many mistakes and get a low rating for the job you spent hours working on. (If your rating doesn’t meet a certain standard, Rev can take away your account.) You also want to make sure to invest in a good set of headphones, especially if you have children in your home!

I found the work exciting at first. I have a good ear and am a fairly quick and accurate typist. This is definitely a great advantage for a job as a transcriptionist. The more I worked on the projects, the more I realized just how much time it was consuming of my life. Sure, I was getting paid, but there were deadlines. Sometimes, the audio was just so terrible, it took hours to transcribe 15 minutes of audio. (I’m not even kidding.)

I was impressed, though, that this company actually held true to its word regarding pay. I worked hard for the money that I earned. Check out below the different earning levels you can achieve and my payout results. You can see I made $573.68 from Rev.com in a matter of three weeks.

Rev Company payout levelsRev Earnings schedule

The Pros

* It’s a legitimate company. I did the work and was paid via PayPal

* Money was always delivered on time, as promised

* Offers a way to earn money from the comfort of your home

* Allows you the opportunity to work when you want

* You have the opportunity to choose the jobs you want to work on

* If audio is too difficult, you can unclaim the job within a certain amount of time

The Cons

* The work is extremely time-consuming

* Some (most) of the audio quality is terrible and very difficult to decipher

* Deadlines on some projects were difficult to meet

* Review of your work can be very harshly ‘graded’, giving you lower metrics

* There are times when there was little or no work available

* Projects always take longer to complete than you expect them to

Overall Thoughts

Within Rev’s program, you can either transcribe audio or caption. I didn’t dive into the captioning side of things, so I can’t offer my advice on that topic. If you’re an accurate typist and have a good ear, this might be a good starting point for you, if you’re looking for cash. However, I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you how time-consuming these projects are. There’s a reason they give you 10-12 hours as a deadline for an hour of audio. This is a full-time job, for not that great of pay if you do the math and average the pay versus how much time you spend on the projects.

Better Solution

There’s a reason I only stuck it out for three weeks, friend. I was missing out on so much time with my family. Sure, the money was fun and it was always a challenge to do better on the next project to improve my own metrics within the platform, but it just wasn’t worth it anymore. When I began looking for other options to make money online, I stumbled upon something that has changed my life for the better!

Nice write up on Rev. I’m not sure I would like doing transcription though, especially since I have troubling understanding people sometimes especially if they talk too fast or have thick accents. I have no idea what is being said to me when I call a tech support line these days lol. Anyways, nice post and have a great weekend friend.

The accents!  That’s something I didn’t even mention!  It was definitely a challenge, that’s for sure.  I felt badly returning a project, but if I can’t understand the audio, it is difficult to type anything.  Thanks for taking the time to read and comment!  There’s a better option available; I wouldn’t waste too much time with Rev.

Hello, I must say that this article on Rev is very helpful and informative. I did not hear about it so far but I think it has nice potential, earning a few extra bucks a month is not bad at all. Most important thing is that it is legit, others depends on our work and dedication. I will definitely give it a try.

Hello!  Rev does offer an opportunity to make money.  However, it’s not something I’d recommend if you have children or pets in your home.  It’s very time consuming as well.  I have found and turned to Wealthy Affiliate, where I have acquired all the tools and training necessary to build an online business.  I wish you luck in your endeavors!

Excellent review! I only wish I knew what the other part was; I can look that up later. I used to think transcribing would be a fantastic way to earn a living. I wonder why you have to learn a particular style of writing when you’re required to transcribe word for word. I’ve read some people advise that you can transcribe using a voice transcriber made for your computer. But then you’d have to keep an eye on it to make sure there are no mistakes. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to understand some of the speakers, especially if they’re using unfamiliar terms. Oh, the agony! Wealthy Affiliate takes longer for the money to kick in, but once it does, the work is fun – not painstaking. Thanks for writing this!

    • admin says:

That’s a great question you raise about having to learn a particular style of writing.  I never tried to use a voice transcriber!  I wonder how well (or not) that would work!  It may have saved me some time, but alas, I’ve since moved on to Wealthy Affiliate, where I know the journey I’ve begun will be long-lasting.  Thank you for your comments!  Best wishes to you!

Thank you for your post. I started my online business for a while now and am actively looking for money-making opportunities. Program like Revdotcom can be the program for me to make some money.

Here comes your review. You give a honest and straightforward review on Rev. I like the Pros and Cons analyses you made, which give clear picture on the potential to make money. It is legitimate company to make some money, but the circumstances indicate that there are so many barriers to make it rewardable efforts. I run my own business and time is essential for me to manage so many tasks. It is likely that I need to invest a lot of time to make little money. I feel that this program is not feasible for me at this stage of my business.

It is kind of you sharing this valuable information with us.

I agree with you 100%, Anthony!  I have moved on from Rev as well, and my new business venture with Wealthy Affiliate requires a lot of time as it is, bu the payoff, in the long run, will be far greater than anything I made with Rev.  With all the time I spent with Rev, there’s just no way I could continue to make money that way.  It is legit, yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you already are working full time on something else.  Thank you for stopping by!  Good luck with your business as well!

  5. Antonio says:

    Hi

To be a good transcriber you need to have good typing skills and also have good listening skills. There is no point if you cannot do both, as otherwise you will be spending hours transcribing. I can imagine that for non-typists that they would frequently miss there targets. I can understand if you make some money at home but if you are interested in this as a career, you could make more working as a secretary or as a PA. It seems that it is getting a job done cheaper than hiring staff.

It may be for some people, it is certainly not for me. I am not that brilliant as a typist and I need other ways to make money at home. I appreciate your honest review and that you have personally taking part, which is certainly encouraging for people to hear.

    Thanks

    Antonio

    • admin says:

Hey, Antonio!  I completely agree with you!  While I am a decent typer and listener, it just wasn’t for me.  I found Wealthy Affiliate and it has helped me begin a business that will suit me for many years to come.  I would definitely take a look at what WA can offer, specifically if you want to become your own boss!  Thanks for stopping by!  I appreciate your insight!

I’ve worked for and searched for freelancers before.
This website is new to me.
It sounds like a good place to earn money.
After reading this, learning that is time consuming sounds so much like taking surveys.
The transcription sounds a bit sketchy too.
I have a difficult time understanding people’s voices sometimes.
The money sure helps but at what price.
Are there too many times when there is no work available?

    • admin says:

Hi, Rob!  Thank you for stopping by!  I appreciate your thoughts.  This company, while legit, is just far too time-consuming for my liking.  I was missing out on too much family time and as a result, have tossed it to a corner for now.  It’ll be there if I am bored one day.

To answer your question, there were times, yes, that audio was very difficult to understand, so it was frustrating as well.  Also, jobs would be limited on Fridays and Saturdays due to other companies not submitting audio at the end of the week.  The only jobs that would be available seemed to be those that were rejected by the masses due to the poor quality of the audio.

I am beyond thankful to have found Wealthy Affiliate.  I’ve been able to learn how to build my business (essentially for free) from the foundation.  The training, live webinars, and the community makes it all worthwhile.  I can’t believe there is such a place online, but I’m so very glad I’ve found it!  Best of luck to you!

    • admin says:

      English version of comment:

I heard about Rev and tried. Unfortunately, I have trouble understanding. So I didn’t pass the test the first time. Then I didn’t try again. It was very difficult for me to write what I hear about a smart discussion about technology that we will reach on Mars (this was my test). I wouldn’t try again the second time …

Thank you for visiting!! I appreciate your comments. Rev can be very difficult and extremely time consuming. That’s why I have given up on it and moved to Wealthy Affiliate! I don’t blame you for not trying again. You should look into WA!!

  8. Carol5162 says:

I have never really enrolled for Rev Freelancing but I can see they are very serious about their business for them to give you their methods of doing things through their style guide. I agree this is a great way to learn too. I am surprised that an hours difficult audio can take that long to transcribe. I guess this is not for the faint hearted. But it is still viable if you have nothing else to do. Thank you for sharing this.

    • admin says:

      Hi, Carol!

If you have a lot of time on your hands, then I would definitely look into contracting with Rev.  However, it just became too time-consuming for me!  The difficult audio was frustrating at best.  I spent too many hours away from my family. This is why I’ve made the switch to a whole new opportunity that lies with Wealthy Affiliate!  It’s working so well for me!  Thanks again for visiting!  Best of luck on your search to make money online!!  🙂

500 dollars to a lot of people is a lot of money. Having said that, this can really be a legitimate way to making money online especially for those in need of some quick cash. It does take some level of commitment to transcribe and patience but it can be worth it if you stick to it. Getting involved with a company that is legit would be worth putting your effort into so at the end of doing a good job your pay can be guaranteed.

    • admin says:

      Hi, Manuel!

I agree!  $500 in a few weeks was a great addition for me!  However, when I averaged out the amount I made and the time it took me, it just wasn’t worth it.  However, it is legit and I stand by their policies.  I just have moved on to Wealthy Affiliate.  It has promised me a brighter future than Rev.  Thanks for stopping by!!

Wi really like that you actually have used it so that makes your review even more authentic! Ive never heard of this particular site before but I have heard of some work from home ones.  A lot of them are scams. I’m glad to see that this one I not! Tha k you for your honesty and sharing!
